Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens will soon host “Of Earthen Kin: Works by Katie Kaplan”, opening on June 6, 2025. This exhibition highlights the profound intersections of art, nature, and social advocacy through Kaplan’s dynamic creative practice. As a Philadelphia-based multidisciplinary artist, Katie Kaplan has crafted a deeply engaging body of work that spans diverse mediums such as printmaking, sculpture, textiles, and video.
Katie Kaplan’s background in sustainable practice—highlighted by her management of a natural dye garden—reinforces her thoughtful approach to creation. Kaplan, a Pratt Institute graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture, has consistently emphasized community-centered projects that leverage art as a medium for environmental and social advocacy.

Of Earthen Kin: Works by Katie Kaplan
“Of Earthen Kin” provides a transformative experience that contests prevailing perceptions of identity and justice while underscoring the intimate bond with our environment. Kaplan’s voice uniquely blends visual poetry with urgent activism, emphasizing themes of identity, environmental stewardship, and social justice. Her vibrant prints and powerful posters confront pressing issues surrounding visibility and gender equality, advocating for ecological awareness and cultural change.

The exhibit’s opening night reception on June 6, from 6 to 9 p.m., invites attendees into Kaplan’s vividly expressive world with a pay-as-you-wish format. Additionally, Kaplan will host a special Tour & Talk on June 10 from 6 to 8 p.m., offering you an opportunity to engage with her artistic processes, motivations, and ecological pledges.
