Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Sets December 11 Opening Date

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, designed by Frank Gehry, opens December 11, 2026, joining the Guggenheim constellation and Saadiyat Cultural District with a thematic, non-chronological curatorial approach.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open to the public on December 11, 2026, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi announced in late July, confirming a date more than a decade after the museum’s collection began taking shape. Designed by the late Frank Gehry, the museum becomes the fourth in the Guggenheim constellation alongside New York, Venice, and Bilbao — and the first built from the ground up on the scale its earlier statements had promised.

What Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s Architecture Signals About Gehry’s Final Major Museum

The building sits on Saadiyat Island at the edge of the water, its skyline broken by ten sculptural cones — nine clad in stainless steel mesh, one in onyx and glass — rising as high as 88 meters. The cones aren’t purely sculptural: they’re built to provide natural ventilation and shade, tying the structure’s form to its climate function in a way that reads as more pragmatic than spectacle, despite the scale.

Inside, 30 galleries connect through a central atrium across 11,600 square meters of interior space, with another 23,000 square meters of exhibition area outdoors in the cones and surrounding terraces. The total built footprint runs to 80,000 square meters, making Guggenheim Abu Dhabi one of the largest additions to the Guggenheim Foundation’s museum network to date, and among Gehry’s largest completed cultural buildings.

A Curatorial Approach That Breaks From Chronology

Rather than organizing its collection by period or region, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has structured its galleries around thematic vectors — Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language, and Storytelling among them — spanning art from the 1960s to the present. The approach lets works from different geographies and decades sit in dialogue rather than in sequence, a departure from how most encyclopedic museums have traditionally hung modern and contemporary collections.

The museum has been assembling its holdings since 2009, with works spanning painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image, and new media. Dr. Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said the museum’s collection is “uniquely local and global, centred in the region but with works from all continents.”

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s Place Within Saadiyat Cultural District

The museum is the newest addition to Saadiyat Cultural District, joining Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, Berklee Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat, and Abrahamic Family House — a concentration of institutions that has made the district one of the most closely watched cultural developments of the past decade. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a joint undertaking between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, called the museum “a defining moment in our cultural journey.” Details on the collection’s specific commissions and inaugural exhibitions are expected in the coming months, ahead of the December opening.
