Thomas J Price at Hauser & Wirth NY features monumental bronze sculptures redefining power and representation through everyday identities.

Redefining Representation through Monumental Bronze Figures

Thomas J Price challenges conventions of power and representation in his exhibition, “Resilience of Scale,” his first major solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth in New York. Taking over the gallery’s SoHo space, Price presents five towering bronze sculptures and an expansive photographic installation, activating viewers in a narrative of scale, identity, and societal standards.

Born in 1981 and based in London, Thomas J Price has built an international reputation with exhibitions at prominent venues including The Power Plant in Toronto, The National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Transformative Power of Thomas J Price

In “Resilience of Scale,” Thomas J Price introduces bronzes up to 12 feet in height. These large-scale sculptures, crafted using digital sculpting and the ancient lost-wax casting technique, portray everyday people in casual attire and relaxed poses. Each sculpture represents fictional identities, created from a blend of images sourced from street photography, magazine visuals, and open call castings.

Complementing his sculptures, Thomas J Price’s photographic series, “Hand Arrangement (The Complex Journeys of a Simple Form),” includes 18 individually framed photographs displayed in a grid, depicting Price’s hands interacting with photographs of classical sculptures, manipulating context to challenge and reframe historical narratives of cultural authority and authenticity.

Thomas J Price continues to assert his influential presence globally, having been commissioned by Hackney Council in 2021 for permanent sculptures honoring the Windrush generation. His exhibition “Witness” appeared in partnership with The Studio Museum in Harlem at Marcus Garvey Park from 2021 to 2022, while his art also features in the traveling exhibition “The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure,” currently at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Future showcases include a multi-venue exhibition in Florence, Italy in March 2025, and the unveiling of the Neil Balvanes Tallawoladah Lawn Commission at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in September.
