The Dina Wind Art Foundation presents a solo exhibition by artist Kara Mshinda, titled “Assembled Presence,” which opened on March 13 and runs through May 31, 2025. Kara Mshinda – Bridging Anthropology and Visual Expression

Kara Mshinda, an Ohio-born visual anthropologist, combines her academic training in Interdisciplinary Anthropology from The University of Akron with artistic studies at Philadelphia’s Temple University. Through her practice, Mshinda constructs a powerful intersection between anthropological observation and creative expression, making insightful visual statements about everyday experiences and the rich nuances of cultural identity.

“Assembled Presence” prominently features Mshinda’s deep engagement with themes of femininity and sensuality, influenced by the vibrant aesthetics of Ball culture and “vogue femme” dance performances. Through skillful manipulation of imagery sourced from contemporary fashion magazines, Kara Mshinda crafts a visual language where expressions of desire, femininity, and identity are celebrated and recontextualized through the powerful lens of the feminine gaze.

Kara Mshinda – Fragmentation, Reassembly, and Social Reflection

Central to Kara Mshinda’s artistic exploration in “Assembled Presence” is her examination of fractured realities stemming from significant social disruptions such as the COVID-19 quarantine and Hurricane Katrina. Each piece in this profound series was meticulously photographed on 35mm film, highlighting intimate moments and broader social narratives disrupted by isolation and displacement. Her process involves printing the photographs as transparencies, strategically cutting, and then digitally reassembling them to produce evocative visual compositions. This meticulous technique results in imagery that is neither wholly documentary nor purely abstract, offering powerful meditations on community resilience, discovery, and urban life.

This work reveals Mshinda’s ability to transform constrained artistic parameters into imaginative, expansive explorations.
